Dogs are man’s best friend until they aren’t. Pet owners have the responsibility to properly train and contain their animals to protect others from dangerous attacks. In Indiana, if a dog bite occurs as a result of the owner’s failure to do so, the owner can be held liable for the injuries inflicted by its dog.
A dog owner can be held liable for the injuries inflicted by its dog if the dog has either shown a dangerous propensity for violence in the past or is a breed which is commonly associated with attacks. Either way, a dog owner must exercise reasonable care in the keeping and controlling of its dog.
Dog Bite Injuries Can Cause Lasting Harm
If you or a family member has been bitten by a dog it is important to receive medical attention if necessary. Depending on the severity of the bite, it is possible there may be permanent scarring and/or nerve damage.
In addition to the physical effects of a dog bite, many people, especially children, may suffer from lasting fears of animals due to the attack. These victims may require counseling to manage or overcome their fears.
